A man paints the streetscape in the historic jewelry district of downtown LA

MKM has exciting news—we have a new location in the historic Downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District.

This area including Olive Street, Hill Street, and Broadway Street, from 5th to 8th Streets (south-east of Pershing Square), is the largest jewelry district in the United States and includes around 5,000 businesses. You can find jewelry designers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, as well as gold, silver, diamond, pearl, and precious stone LA jewelry district wholesale merchants—many of whom buy and exchange jewelry and precious metals.

For those with impending nuptials, the area also features wedding jewelry stores and bridal shops, while the wider area offers theaters, restaurants, and factory outlets for all kinds of clothing. We’re proud to have our business in this historic district, helping us work directly with our clients, customers, and the jewelers who have helped make Los Angeles what it is today.

The History of the Downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District

Most of the buildings in the Downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District were built in the early Twentieth Century (around 1923) when the number of motor vehicles increased significantly. The oldest building in the area is the three-story building now occupied by Teresa’s Bridals. This moderate building height is typical of the era, as the architects and planners of the time wanted to avoid the heavy urban concentration caused by the use of skyscrapers in the East-coast cities.

LA jewelry district wholesale, manufacturing, and retail really began to boom in the 1960s when gold was considered more stable than the U.S. dollar. However, by this time there were already some jewelry businesses in the area, with the earliest being the Laykin Diamond Company and Harry Winston & Co, established in 1932. Shops typically had their retail space at street level and offices upstairs, with buildings like the Alexandra Hotel and St Vincent Jewelry Center housing multiple retailers and manufacturers.

The St Vincent Jewelry Center

MKM Jewelry is proud to be located in the St Vincent Jewelry Center, 640 South Hill Street, Suite 950, in the famous Downtown Los Angeles Jewelry District. We’re also close to a cute alleyway of European-inspired restaurants and the historic Los Angeles Theater across the street on South Broadway. The proximity to LA jewelry district wholesale suppliers and retailers will open up exciting new opportunities for serving our customers and supporting local businesses right here in California.
